FAQ

Top Shade Questions

Lamp shades are measured in inches by the Top x Bottom x Slant dimensions.

  1. Measure across the top of the shade to get the top dimension.
  2. For the bottom dimension, measure across the bottom of the shade.
  3. Measure along the slant (side) of the shade to get the slant height.

These basic guidelines will help determine a good size and style shade for your lamp.

The shade height should be roughly 1/3 of the height of the lamp. For the shade width, a good rule of thumb is about 2x the length of the lamp base. Above all, you will also want to ensure the lamp hardware is fully concealed by the lamp shade.

Floor lamps typically require a shade with a bottom dimension of 18 inches or larger.

The term spider lamp shade refers to the spider fitter the shade has. This is the most common type of fitter for table and floor lamps. The fitter sits on top of the lamp harp and is secured by a finial.
Most of our shades feature a spider fitter.

The fitter is what connects the lamp shade to the lamp body. Fitters are not interchangeable, so be sure to use a shade with the correct fitter for your lamp. The most common type of fitters are: Spider, Clip-On, and Uno. To learn more, you can view our lamp shade guide.
