Seeking help for a new lamp shade? Need help determining the correct fitter or style? We have put together a list of guidelines to help you with your next lamp shade purchase.
How to Measure a Lamp Shade
One of the questions we get asked the most is how to correctly measure a lamp shade.
Lamp shades are measured by Top x Bottom x Slant.
- Measure across the top of the shade to get the top dimension.
- For the bottom dimension, measure across the bottom of the shade.
- Measure along the slant (side) of the shade to get the slant height.
Getting Just the Right Style and Size
These basic guidelines will help determine a good size and style shade for your lamp.
The shade height should be roughly 1/3 of the height of the lamp. For the shade width, a good rule of thumb is about 2x the length of the lamp base. Above all, you will also want to ensure the lamp hardware is fully concealed by the lamp shade.
Meanwhile, floor lamps typically require a shade with a bottom dimension of 18 inches or larger.
Lamp shades come in a wide variety of styles so it is advisable to select a style that fits your lamp. We generally recommend matching the shapes of the base with the shape of the shade, for instance a square styled base with a square shade will bring a consistent look.
Lamp Shade Fitters
There are many types of lamp shade fitters. The fitters are not interchangeable so it is important to know which type you need to attach your lamp shade to the lamp. The majority of our lamp shades feature a spider clip-on fitter.
Spider Washer Fitter
The spider washer fitter is typically the most common type of fitter for floor and table lamps. It sits directly on top of the lamp harp and is secured by a finial.
Bulb Clip-On Fitter
These are found on smaller lamps and chandeliers. Bulb fitters clip on directly to a regular round light bulb.
You will find these on smaller lamps, sconces and chandeliers. Candle fitters clip on directly to candle bulbs.
